World’s ‘Largest Animal Sacrifice’ Starts in Nepal After Ban Ignored

Hindu worshippers have begun killing thousands of buffalo in what is reputed to be the world’s biggest animal sacrifice, held every five years in a remote corner of Nepal, despite efforts to end the bloodshed. The Gadhimai festival began in the early hours of Tuesday amid tight security, with the ceremonial slaughter of a goat, rat, chicken, pig and a pigeon.

At Least 50 People Dead and 1 Million Affected by Floods in South Asia

Dozens of people have died in Nepal and a million have been affected in north-east India following heavy rains that triggered landslides and flooding across parts of south Asia. More than 50 people have been confirmed dead and 30 more remain missing in Nepal, where rescue efforts have been hampered by continued bad weather, which has blocked key highways and destroyed phone lines.

49 Killed in Nepal Plane Crash

A passenger plane from Bangladesh crashed into a field, near the Kathmandu, Nepal airport, and burst into flames, Monday, killing at least 49 of the 71 people on board. According to the Tribhuvan Airport general manager Raj Kumar Chhetri, the plane was ordered not to land by air traffic control, but the pilot was unresponsive.

Nepal Sets New Rules for Everest Climbers After Deadly Season

All climbers seeking a permit for Everest must have prior high altitude mountaineering experience and demonstrable training, a high-level commission for the Nepalese government has ruled. The recommendation was issued by the body charged with looking at the issue of high-altitude safety after one of the deadliest seasons in recent years on Everest, which was blamed on inexperience and crowding near the summit.
