Kim Kardashian West announced Monday that she would launch her shapewear line, originally named Kimono Solutionwear, under a new name after facing backlash. Her about-face comes days after the mayor of Kyoto, Japan, asked Kardashian West in an open letter to reconsider using the name Kimono. Last week, Kardashian West revealed her latest venture, a collection of skin tone-colored shapewear. The name Kimono inspired the hashtag #KimOhNo.
Fashion icon Karl Lagerfeld, a fixture in the luxury fashion industry over the last 50 years, died early Tuesday, Chanel announced. He was 85. The German designer who was nicknamed “Kaiser Karl” was of the most hardworking figures in the industry. He held down the top design jobs at LVMH-owned luxury label Fendi from 1977, and Paris’ family-owned power-house Chanel in 1983. His fashion career kicked off in the 1950s, when he apprenticed for Balmain and later hired by Paris-based house, Patou.
Fashion designer Kate Spade, best known for her signature handbags, was found dead at the age of 55 in her New York City apartment on Tuesday in an apparent suicide. Kate was found ‘unresponsive’ after hanging herself and leaving a note, the contents of which were not revealed. Kate Spade Handbags was founded in 1993.
At American fashion’s biggest awards ceremony, the three biggest honorees were social activists and foreign born designers. The star-studded lineup of guests at the award show hosted the likes of Raf Simmons, Nicole Kidman, and Heidi Klum to name a few. The show wrapped up with Janelle Monáe; Cecile Richards, president of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America and the Planned Parenthood Action Fund; and Gloria Steinem — accepting a joint tribute in their honor.
