President Biden and Russian President Vladimir Putin sat down in Geneva for a widely anticipated summit, where despite the deeply strained U.S.-Russia relationship, both leaders claimed to have a “positive” dialogue. The White House said the goal of the summit was to continue work toward a “stable” and “predictable” relationship with Russia. “There is no substitute for face-to-face dialogue between leaders. None,” Biden said.

Britain and U.S. Reach Truce in Aircraft Trade Dispute

Britain and United States agreed on Thursday to resolve a long-running trade dispute over Airbus (AIR.PA) and Boeing (BA.N) and turn their attention to tackling Chinese subsidies, echoing a five-year tariff truce announced by Washington and Brussels. Together, the matching deals draw a line under 17 years of battles at the World Trade Organization over aid for the world’s largest planemakers and establish a common front against “non-market” funding, in a reference to China’s rising aerospace sector.

Chinese Astronauts Reach New Space Station

Astronauts on board China’s first crewed spacecraft in nearly five years have reached the new Tiangong space station after blasting off from the Gobi desert. A Long March-2F rocket launched the three astronauts in the Shenzhou-12 spacecraft, which docked with Tianhe – the main section of the Tiangong station – just over seven hours later. It is China’s first human mission to space since 2016.

Girls to Break Centuries-Old German Male Choir School Tradition

Girls will be accepted for the first time at a church music school attached to one of Germany’s most famous boys’ choirs – the Regensburger Domspatzen. The Bavarian city of Regensburg has had a boys’ choir at its Roman Catholic cathedral since 975. “Domspatzen” means “cathedral sparrows”. Girls trained at the school from next year will join a new girls’ choir. The boys’ one, which includes men for bass and tenor parts, will remain male-only.

Nadal withdraws from Wimbledon and Tokyo Olympics

Rafael Nadal has said he will not be taking part in Wimbledon or the Tokyo Olympics this year. The 35-year-old announced the move on social media, saying it was not “an easy decision” but “after listening to my body” and discussing it with his team he said it was “the right decision”. The Spaniard continued: “The goal is to prolong my career and continue to do what makes me happy”.
