Liz Cheney Removed from House Leadership

Congresswoman Liz Cheney of Wyoming was removed from her leadership position in the Republican caucus of the House of Representatives on Wednesday morning in the outcome of an internal battle seen as a bellwether of the future direction of the party. Immediately after the meeting where she was stripped of her position, Cheney said she was “absolutely committed” to not embracing Donald Trump’s “big lie” about the election.

Israel-Gaza violence: UN Envoy Warns of ‘Heading to Full-Scale War’

Barrages of rockets have streamed out of Gaza while Israeli jets pounded the territory in return, in the most severe outbreak of violence since the 2014 war. Several of the rockets fired by Hamas militants in Gaza struck Israel’s largest city Tel Aviv overnight. At least 56 people have been killed in Gaza including 14 children, and six in Israel. At least 335 have been wounded, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health.

Austrian Leader Sebastian Kurz Investigated by Corruption Inquiry

Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz has said he is being investigated by anti-corruption prosecutors over allegations that he made false statements to a parliamentary commission. MPs have been investigating claims of nepotism, including the appointment of party loyalist Thomas Schmid as head of Austria’s state holding company. WhatsApp messages on Mr Schmid’s phone suggest Mr Kurz may have more to answer than previously known.

Russia Jails Former Opposition Mayor

A court in the Russian city of Yekaterinburg jailed its former mayor for nine days on Wednesday after finding him guilty of using social media to urge people to protest for the release of jailed Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny. Yevgeny Roizman, who served as mayor of Russia’s fourth-largest city from 2013 to 2018, was charged with organizing an illegal rally after he urged his nearly 500,000 followers on Twitter to take to the streets.

DeGeneres plans to end her daytime talk show after the upcoming 19th season ends next year, NBC News has confirmed.
