Children Killed in Shooting at Russian School

Seven children and a teacher have been killed in a shooting at a school in the Russian city of Kazan, officials say. More than 20 others, mostly children, were reportedly wounded. A 19-year-old suspect was detained. The attack happened 820km (510 miles) east of Moscow, in the mainly Muslim republic of Tatarstan. Responding to the shooting, Russian President Vladimir Putin said he would review the country’s gun control laws.

Gaza Militants, Israel Trade New Rocket Fire and Airstrikes

Palestinian militants launched dozens of rockets from Gaza and Israel unleashed new airstrikes against them early Tuesday, in an escalation triggered by soaring tensions in Jerusalem and days of clashes at an iconic mosque in the holy city. Twenty-four people, including nine children, were killed in Gaza overnight, most of them in Israeli strikes. This round of violence, like previous ones, was fueled by conflicting claims over Jerusalem.

Queen’s Speech Unveils Johnson’s Plans on Free Speech

Boris Johnson’s government has unveiled plans for the coming parliament in a Queen’s speech that combined interventionist economics with openly populist moves in areas such as free speech, policing and voter ID. Announcing the list of planned new bills in a relatively minimalist ceremony with only 74 people in the Lords chamber and much of the usual pomp pared back, the Queen began by saying the overall aim was to “level up opportunities” across the UK.

U.S. Ship Fires 30 Warning Shots as Iranian Speedboats Get Close

A U.S. Coast Guard cutter fired about 30 warning shots after Iranian Revolutionary Guard speedboats came close to U.S. Navy ships in the Strait of Hormuz, the Defense Department said Monday. The U.S. last week intercepted thousands of weapons from Iran in the North Arabian Sea that were bound for the Houthi rebels in Yemen. Last month, there were two tense incidents in the Persian Gulf between U.S. and Iranian vessels.

China Population Growth Slips to Slowest Ever

China’s population grew at its slowest in the last decade since the 1950s as births declined, sowing doubt over Beijing’s ability to power its economy as it succumbs to the same aging trends afflicting developed nations like Japan. The 2020 results of the country’s once-a-decade census on Tuesday showed the population of mainland China increased 5.38% to 1.41 billion. That was the least since modern census-taking began in 1953.
