Ohio Officials Release More Body Cam Video

Columbus, Ohio, officials released additional body camera video on Wednesday of a police officer fatally shooting a Black teen who charged two females with a knife. Columbus Mayor Andrew Ginther said state investigators will determine “if the officer involved was wrong, and if he was we will hold him accountable.” The fatal shooting comes at a time when police use of force around the nation — and in Columbus specifically — is under new scrutiny.

China Condemns Bombing of Pakistan Hotel Hosting Ambassador

A Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson has condemned Wednesday’s powerful car bomb explosion at a hotel where the Chinese ambassador is understood to be staying in Quetta in south-west Pakistan. At least five people were killed and 12 injured in the attack. Quetta is the capital of Balochistan province, where the military has been fighting a decade-long low-level insurgency.

NASA Extracts Breathable Oxygen from Thin Martian Air

NASA has logged another extraterrestrial first on its latest mission to Mars: converting carbon dioxide from the Martian atmosphere into pure, breathable oxygen, the U.S. space agency said on Wednesday. The unprecedented extraction of oxygen, literally out of thin air on Mars, was achieved Tuesday by an experimental device aboard Perseverance, a six-wheeled science rover that landed on the Red Planet Feb. 18 after a seven-month journey from Earth.

India Sees World’s Highest Daily Coronavirus Cases

India has recorded the highest one-day tally of new Covid-19 cases anywhere in the world – and the country’s highest number of deaths over 24 hours. It has close to 16 million confirmed cases, second only to the US. The country is in the grip of a second wave. Meanwhile, some countries are bringing in stricter rules affecting travel to and from India amid fears over the rising cases.

Earth Day Summit Aims for More Consensus on Cutting Emissions

US President Joe Biden will aim to kick-start a crucial year of action on climate change today as he hosts 40 world leaders at an Earth Day summit. The virtual White House meeting coincides with Mr Biden’s expected promise to slash America’s greenhouse gas emissions by at least 50% by 2030. A senior official said the Biden administration is increasing its own targets in order to more effectively convince other countries to do the same.
