Early exit polls Tuesday showed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s right-wing Likud party in the lead but with no clear winner as the nation headed to the polls in its fourth parliamentary election in two years. Polls forecast a tight race, with Likud predicted to win the most seats in the 120-seat parliament, known as the Knesset. But it remains unclear if he will be able to form a majority coalition.

Suez Canal Container Ship Partially Refloated After Blocking Trade Artery

One of the largest container ships in the world has been partially refloated after it ran aground in the Suez canal, causing a huge jam of vessels at either end of the vital international trade artery. The 220,000-ton, 400-metre-long Ever Given – a so-called “megaship” – became stuck near the southern end of the canal on Tuesday. The Suez Canal Authority said it had lost the ability to steer amid high winds and a dust storm.

EU Calls for tougher Vaccine Export Controls

The European Commission is calling for tougher controls on COVID-19 vaccine exports. President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen said “open roads should run in both directions”, adding: “The EU has an excellent portfolio of different vaccines and we have secured more than enough doses for the entire population. But we have to ensure timely and sufficient vaccine deliveries to EU citizens. Every day counts.”

Colorado Mass Shooting Suspect Known to FBI

The suspected gunman who killed 10 people in a mass shooting at a Boulder, Colo., grocery store this week was previously known to the FBI, according to a report. Ahmad Al Aliwi Alissa, a 21-year-old from the Denver suburb of Arvada, was linked to another individual under investigation by the bureau. He has been charged with 10 counts of first-degree murder and booked into the Boulder County Jail.

‘Double Mutant’ Covid Variant found in India

A new double mutant variant of the coronavirus and 771 others have been detected in samples collected from 18 states across India. Of the 10,787 samples, 736 were positive for the UK variant, 34 for the South African variant and one for the Brazilian variant. The report comes amid a recent surge in Covid cases in India. But the government said there was no link between the spike in cases and these variants.
