Facebook to Lift Australia News Ban

Facebook announced Tuesday that it would lift a ban on Australians viewing and sharing news on its platform after it struck a deal with the government on proposed legislation that would make digital giants pay for journalism. The social media company caused alarm with its sudden decision last week to block news on its platform across Australia after the House of Representatives passed the draft law.

U.S. COVID-19 Death Toll Reaches 500,000

More than 500,000 people have died from COVID-19 in the U.S. This week President Biden is asking Americans to mark the 500,000 deaths with a moment of silence at sunset Monday. He’s also ordered flags on all federal buildings lowered to half-staff for five days. Now, around 2,000 people die from the disease every day on average, according to data from Johns Hopkins University, down from a high of over 3,000 a day on average in mid-January.

El Chapo’s Wife Arrested on Drug Trafficking Charges

The wife of the Mexican drug kingpin known as El Chapo has been arrested at a US airport on international drug trafficking charges. Emma Coronel Aispuro was held at Dulles International Airport. She has been accused of conspiring to distribute cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin and marijuana in the US, as well as helping her husband escape prison in Mexico via a secret tunnel in 2015.

Signs of ‘Metal Fatigue’ Found on Denver Plane Engine

One of the fan blades in the plane engine that failed shortly after take-off in Denver showed signs of metal fatigue, investigators say. Flight 328 was able to make an emergency landing at Denver airport on Saturday, but parts of the engine fell on homes. No-one was hurt. Boeing has recommended grounding all its 777 aircraft with the same engines.

Extinction Threatens Third of Freshwater Fish Species

Nearly a third of all freshwater fish species are threatened by extinction, according to a new report released by 16 conservation groups on Tuesday. Migratory populations have declined by more than three-quarters since the 1970s. “The World’s Forgotten Fishes” says that 80 freshwater species — which make up more than half of all the world’s species — have already been declared extinct, with 16 disappearing in 2020 alone.
