Google Threatens to Shut Down Search in Australia

Google has threatened to remove its search engine from Australia and Facebook has threatened to remove news from its feed for all Australian users if a code forcing the companies to negotiate payments to news media companies goes ahead. The move would mean the 19 million Australians who use Google every month would no longer be able to use Google Search.

Republicans Propose Delaying Trump’s Impeachment

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell proposed delaying former President Trump’s impeachment trial until February so the former president’s new legal team will have time to prepare his defense. The Democrat-led House rushed a vote last week to impeach Trump for “incitement of insurrection” after a violent mob stormed the Capitol on Jan. 6 and delayed the certification of President Biden’s electoral college win.

Russia Detains Navalny Aides as Protests Go Viral

Russian police have detained close aides of the jailed Russian opposition politician Alexei Navalny, whose fans have flooded social media with calls to rally in support of him on Saturday. Moscow police say any unauthorized demonstrations and provocations will be “immediately suppressed”. Japan and IOC Determined to Hold Tokyo Olympics

Reports of this summer’s Tokyo Olympic Games being canceled due to Covid-19 are “categorically untrue”, the International Olympic Committee said in a statement to CNN on Friday. The Japanese government also said on Friday that it is determined the Games will go ahead following an unconfirmed report that a cancellation might be imminent.
