EU Chief Hints at Progress on Brexit Deal

There is a “path” to a Brexit trade deal being agreed before the end of the month, the president of the European Commission has said. Britain left the EU at the end of January and entered into an 11-month transition period, following EU rules and regulations whilst trying to negotiate a free trade deal by the end of this year.

Erdogan Says U.S. Sanctions an Attack on Turkey’s Rights

President Tayyip Erdogan said on Wednesday that U.S. sanctions imposed on Turkey over its purchase of Russian defense systems were an attack on Ankara’s sovereign rights aimed at deterring its defense industry. On Monday, Washington imposed the sanctions targeting NATO member Turkey’s Defence Industry Directorate (SSB), its chief Ismail Demir and three other employees over its acquisition of Russian S-400 missile defense systems.

Germany Enters Harder Lockdown

Germany hit a new record level of coronavirus deaths as it entered a harder lockdown Wednesday, closing shops and schools to try to bring down stubbornly high new cases. The country recorded 179.8 deaths of new infections per 100,000 residents over the last seven days, a new high and significantly more than the 149 per 100,000 reported a week ago.

Ex-Wife of Jeff Bezos Gives Away $4bn in Four Months

MacKenzie Scott, the ex-wife of the Amazon founder, Jeff Bezos, has donated more than $4bn in the past four months to hundreds of charities and aid organizations, including food banks fighting the impact of the coronavirus pandemic. Scott, who has a personal net worth of more than $60bn (£44.5bn), pledged to give away much of her wealth after her divorce settlement with Bezos last year.

Recording Emerges of Tom Cruise ‘Shouting at Film Crew’ over Covid

A recording has emerged of Tom Cruise apparently shouting at workers on the set of Mission: Impossible 7 and threatening to fire them if they broke Covid-19 guidelines. The Sun published the expletive-laden audio in which Cruise said: “If I see you doing it again, you’re… gone.” The paper said Cruise had seen two crew members “standing too close to one another in front of a computer screen”.
