Moderna Covid Vaccine Candidate Almost 95% Effective

The race for a coronavirus vaccine has received another shot in the arm with the US biotech firm Moderna becoming the latest to reveal impressive results from phase 3 trials of its jab. An interim analysis released on Monday, and based on 95 patients with confirmed Covid infections, found the candidate vaccine has an efficacy of 94.5%. In the analysis, 90 of the patients received the placebo with the remaining five the vaccine.

Ethiopia’s Tigray Leader Confirms Firing Missiles at Eritrea

The leader of Ethiopia’s Tigray region has confirmed firing missiles at neighboring Eritrea’s capital and is threatening more, marking a huge escalation as the deadly fighting in northern Ethiopia between regional forces and the federal government now spills across an international border. The Tigray regional government has accused Eritrea of attacking it at the invitation of Ethiopia’s government since the conflict erupted on Nov. 4.

10 Patients Killed in Fire on Coronavirus Intensive Care Ward in Romania

Ten people have died after a fire broke out on an intensive care ward treating coronavirus patients in Romania. Seven others are critically injured following the fire at Piatra Neamt county hospital on Saturday. A doctor on duty tried to save patients from the blaze and is in critical condition with first and second-degree burns covering 80% of his body.

Astronaut Crew Launched to Space Station

Four astronauts – three from the US and one from Japan – have launched from Florida on a mission to the International Space Station (ISS). It’s only the second time the firm has supplied the service. The US space agency Nasa has said it is now entering a new era in which routine astronaut journeys to low-Earth orbit are being conducted by commercial providers.
