US President Donald Trump and his White House challenger Joe Biden clashed over Covid and race while trading corruption charges, in their final live TV debate. On the pandemic, Mr Biden would not rule out more lockdowns, while Mr Trump insisted it was time to reopen the US. Mr Trump cited unsubstantiated claims Mr Biden personally profited from his son’s business dealings. The Democrat brought up Mr Trump’s opaque taxes.

US Approves Remdesivir as Drug to Treat COVID-19

Remdesivir, an antiviral drug originally developed to treat Ebola, has been approved for use on COVID-19 patients in the US. The treatment, which is given through an IV in hospital, was signed off by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). It is thought to prevent SARS CoV-2 (the virus that causes COVID-19) from multiplying in the body, with some patients recovering faster after using it.

Polish Court Ruling Amounts to Almost Total Ban on Abortion

Protests gathered across Poland after the Constitutional Tribunal ruled on Thursday that abortion due to foetal defects was unconstitutional, banning the most common of the few legal grounds for ending a pregnancy in the largely Catholic country. After the ruling goes into effect, abortion will only be permissible in Poland in the case of rape, incest or a threat to the mother’s health and life, which make up only about 2% of legal terminations conducted in recent years.

Goldman Sachs Agrees to Record $2.9 Billion DOJ Settlement

The international investment bank Goldman Sachs agreed to pay $2.9 billion and admit wrongdoing for its involvement in the plundering of an economic development fund meant to benefit Malaysia, under the terms of a settlement announced Thursday by the U.S. Justice Department. Instead of helping develop Malaysia’s economy, the fund’s overseers embezzled roughly $4 billion. The scandal also brought down the government of Prime Minister Najib Razak in 2018.

Maxwell Denied Providing Sex Partners for Prince Andrew

Ghislaine Maxwell, financier Jeffrey Epstein’s ex-girlfriend, denied introducing Britain’s Prince Andrew to underage sex partners in a defensive and combative deposition made public Thursday, calling the prince’s accuser an “awful fantasist.” The exchange was contained in hundreds of pages of transcripts ordered released by U.S. District Judge Loretta A. Preska in a civil lawsuit. Many names and several pages in the deposition were blacked out.
