Two Dead in Wisconsin on Third Night of Unrest

Two people were shot dead and another injured when at least one gunman opened fire on protesters in Kenosha, Wisconsin, amid demonstrations against the police shooting of Jacob Blake three days ago. David Beth, the county sheriff, said people describing themselves as belonging to a militia had been patrolling Kenosha’s streets in recent nights but he did not know if the shooter was involved with such a group.

Half a Million Ordered to Evacuate Hurricane Laura

More than half a million people have been ordered to flee the US Gulf Coast as forecasters warn of “catastrophic damage” from Hurricane Laura and say a potentially deadly surge could penetrate 30 miles inland. Authorities made the order after the storm strengthened into a hurricane, telling people in Texas and Louisiana that “actions to protect life and property should be rushed to completion this evening”.

Hong Kong Pro-Democracy Lawmakers Arrested over Yuen Long

Two Hong Kong opposition lawmakers are among 16 people arrested over anti-government protests, as a crackdown on democracy supporters widens. Lam Cheuk-ting and Ted Hui Chi-fung from the Democratic Party were arrested at their homes on Wednesday morning. These latest arrests come two weeks after police arrested media tycoon and vocal Beijing critic Jimmy Lai under a controversial national security law that China recently imposed on Hong Kong.

Flash Floods Kill more than 70 in Afghanistan

A violent flash flood killed more than 70 people and destroyed hundreds of homes just north of Afghanistan’s capital on Wednesday, officials said. The floods swept through Parwan province, which borders Kabul, in the early hours of the morning, washing away men, women and children and destroying 300 homes, according to Ministry of Disaster Management spokesman Tamim Azimi.

Lionel Messi has told Barcelona he wants to leave the club after nearly two decades with the Spanish giants. The club confirmed to The Associated Press on Tuesday that the Argentina great sent a document expressing his desire to leave. The announcement comes 11 days after Barcelona’s humiliating 8-2 loss to Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarterfinals, one of the worst defeats in the player’s career and in the club’s history.
