Spain’s former king Juan Carlos has gone to the Dominican Republic after leaving his home country under a cloud of scandal, Spanish newspapers said on Tuesday. The royal palace announced on Monday that Juan Carlos, who abdicated in 2014 over a previous scandal, was leaving so that his personal affairs would not affect his son Felipe’s reign. The palace did not say where the 82-year-old had gone.
After days of whiplash over the future of TikTok, President Donald Trump said he would allow an American company to acquire the short-form video app. Trump on Monday set September 15 as the deadline for TikTok to find a US buyer, failing which he said he will shut down the app in the country. In an unusual declaration, Trump also said any deal would have to include a “substantial amount of money” coming to the US Treasury.
Hundreds of thousands of people are without power after Hurricane Isaias made landfall in the US, bringing with it winds of 85mph and the threat of storm surges and flash floods. By the time the eye of Isaias hit southern North Carolina it had strengthened into a category one hurricane from a tropical storm. It is due to make its way up the US eastern coast towards Washington, Philadelphia and New York.

Three Micronesian sailors stranded on a tiny, remote island in the western Pacific have been saved after rescuers spotted their SOS message on a beach. The men were found on Pikelot Island in Micronesia by Australian and US military aircraft on Sunday, the Australian Defence Force (ADF) said. They had been missing for three days after their 7m (23ft) skiff ran out of fuel and strayed far off course.
