Trump Signs Hong Kong Sanctions Bill

President Donald Trump said Tuesday he signed into law a bipartisan bill that sanctions Chinese officials who undermine the rights to free speech and assembly in Hong Kong, the latest escalation in an increasingly hostile relationship between Washington and Beijing. “Hong Kong will now be treated the same as mainland China — no special privileges, no special economic treatment, and no export of sensitive technologies,” Trump said.

77 Dead in Floods and Landslides in India’s Assam State

Six more people have died in floods and mudslides in northeastern India’s Assam state, officials said Tuesday, taking the death toll to 77 from more than two weeks of heavy rains that caused one of Asia’s largest rivers to overflow. The Brahmaputra River continued to wreak havoc, displacing more than 2 million people, the officials said. Vast tracts were still underwater with 26 of the state’s 33 districts badly affected.

Toppled Slaver’s Statue Replaced by One of Black Protester in UK

A sculpture of a Black protester with her fist raised in the air has been erected in a stealthy night-time operation in place of a 17th Century English slave trader whose statue was toppled by anti-racism demonstrators in the port city of Bristol. Edward Colston, who made a fortune from trading in West African slaves, was pulled down and thrown in the harbor of the city in southwest England last month.

Glee Star Died of Accidental Drowning

Actress Naya Rivera died of accidental drowning, officials in California have said after a post-mortem examination. The 33-year-old, best known for playing cheerleader Santana Lopez in Glee, went missing during last Wednesday’s boat trip with her son at Lake Piru. After a long search, divers found her body on Monday, prompting an outpouring of love and sympathy from her co-stars.
