US Passes 100,000 Coronavirus Deaths

The United States has recorded more than 100,000 deaths from Covid-19, moving past a grim milestone even as many states relax mitigation measures to stop the spread of the novel coronavirus. The US has recorded more deaths from the disease than any other country in the pandemic, and almost three times as many as the second-ranking country, Britain.

NASA’s SpaceX Launch Scrubbed Due to Weather

History was set to be made today as NASA and SpaceX geared up to launch Americans into space from American soil and on American equipment for the first time in nearly a decade. The launch has been called off for the day, less than 20 minutes before scheduled liftoff from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, due to inclement weather. It has been rescheduled for Saturday, May 30.

Trump to ‘Sign Executive Order About Social Media’

US President Donald Trump will sign an executive order targeting social media firms, the White House has said. It comes after he threatened to shut down social media platforms he accused of stifling conservative voices. The long-running dispute between Mr Trump and social media companies flared up again on Tuesday when one of his posts was given a fact-check label by Twitter for the first time.

Outcry in Iran over So-Called ‘Honor Killing’ of 14-Year-Old Girl

Iran’s president has called for swift action to outlaw so-called “honor killings” after the death of a 14-year-old Iranian girl. Hassan Rouhani urged his cabinet to act after Romina Ashrafi was allegedly killed by her father for running away with her boyfriend, 34-year-old Bahamn Khavari. In traditional societies in the Middle East, including Iran, blame would typically fall on a runaway girl for purportedly having sullied her family’s honor.

Hong Kong No Longer has Autonomy Under China, Pompeo Says

Hong Kong can no longer be regarded as autonomous from mainland China, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said in a notification to Congress on Wednesday, setting the stage for sanctions against Beijing and the withdrawal of the former British colony’s preferential trading status. Under the Hong Kong Policy Act, Hong Kong is seen as “nonsovereign entity distinct from China,” and therefore not subject to the high tariffs Trump placed on mainland China.
