Ukrainian Airliner Crashes in Iran, Killing 176

A Ukrainian airliner crashed shortly after take-off from Tehran early on Wednesday, bursting into flames and killing all 176 people on board. Debris and smoldering engine parts from the Boeing 737, which carrier Ukraine International Airlines said was last serviced two days ago. Among the victims were 82 from Iran, 63 Canadians, 11 Ukrainians, 10 Swedes, three Germans and three Britons, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Vadym Prystaiko said.

Iran Fires 22 Missiles at Two Air Bases in ‘Revenge’ for Qassem Soleimani’s Killing

Iran has fired 22 ballistic missiles at two Iraqi bases housing US and coalition troops. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard has confirmed it launched the attack targeting the Erbil and Al Asad bases in retaliation for last week’s killing of Major General Qassem Soleimani in a US airstrike on Friday morning just outside Baghdad airport. US and Iraqi officials have said there are no immediate reports of casualties.

World’s Worst Measles Outbreak Kills 6,000

The number of people killed by a measles epidemic in the Democratic Republic of Congo has passed 6,000, the World Health Organization (WHO) has said. The WHO says the epidemic is the world’s largest and fastest moving. Around 310,000 suspected measles cases have been reported since the start of 2019, the WHO says. DR Congo is also experiencing the second most deadly outbreak of Ebola the world has ever seen.

State of Emergency Declared After Puerto Rico Struck by its Most Powerful Earthquake

A 6.4 magnitude earthquake struck Puerto Rico early on Tuesday, prompting its governor to declare a state of emergency. It is the strongest yet in a week of tremors and comes less than 24 hours after a 5.8-magnitude quake collapsed a famous natural rock formation, caused power outages and damaged homes. The U.S. territory has been hit by a series of damaging tremors over the past week, with the USGS recording more than 400 earthquakes since December 11, 2019.

Uber Reveals Plans for Flying Taxi to Bypass Road Traffic Congestion

Uber has unveiled plans for a flying taxi at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. The ride-sharing company on Tuesday showed off a full-size mock-up of the electric plane concept vehicle created with South Korean carmaker Hyundai, as it seeks to fly above traffic rather than add to it. Uber hopes to operate commercial air ride-sharing services by 2023.
