3 Dead Including Suspect in Shooting at Texas Church

Two victims were killed and three others were injured when a gunman opened fire inside a crowded Texas church on Sunday morning before he was shot to death by two armed parishioners, including a security guard. The shooting occurred at 10:57 a.m. at the West Freeway Church of Christ in the Fort Worth suburb of White Settlement and was captured on the church’s livestream of the service, officials said.

Chinese Scientists Jailed over ‘World’s First Gene-Edited Babies’

Three scientists who claimed to be behind the first-ever gene-edited babies have been handed prison sentences for illegal medical practice, Chinese state media has said. Lead researcher He Jiankui sparked controversy last year when he claimed to have created the infants by altering the DNA of embryos for several couples during fertility treatments. Xinhua news agency said he was given a three-year prison sentence.

New York’s Jewish Community on Edge After String of Hanukah Attacks

Jewish groups and political leaders have issued calls for increased protection in New York after a string of attacks during Hanukah left members of the region’s Jewish community on edge. On Saturday night, an attacker stabbed five people during Hanukah festivities at a rabbi’s home in Monsey, Rockland county, about 30 miles north of New York City, in what Governor Andrew Cuomo called “an act of domestic terrorism”.

Cyprus Court Finds ‘Gang Rape’ Briton Guilty of Lying

A Cyprus court on Monday found a British woman guilty of lying about being gang-raped by Israeli youths six months ago. In a case closely followed by rights groups, a district court in the town of Paralimni ruled that the woman, aged 19 at the time, had lied about being sexually abused by 12 Israeli teenagers. Sentencing was set for Jan. 7.

Australia Fires Worsen as Every State Hits 100F

Scores of fires are burning out of control across Australia amid a heatwave that has seen temperatures exceed 40C (104F) in every state. The most dangerous fires on Monday were in the state of Victoria. About 30,000 residents and tourists were urged to flee East Gippsland, but evacuations were later deemed too risky as fires encroached on major roads. A volunteer firefighter died battling a blaze in the state of New South Wales.
