Trump Says US Forces Cornered IS Leader in Dead-End Tunnel

Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the shadowy leader of the Islamic State group who presided over its global jihad and became arguably the world’s most wanted man, died after U.S. special operators cornered him during a raid in Syria, President Donald Trump said Sunday. As U.S. troops bore down on al-Baghdadi, he fled into a “dead-end” tunnel with three of his children, Trump said, and detonated a suicide vest, killing himself and the children.

Rescuers Try to Save Two-year-old Boy Stuck in Well

A major rescue operation to save a toddler stuck in a narrow well in India has gone into a fourth day. Sujith Wilson, 2, was initially stuck at about 10m (30ft) but has since fallen further into the 180m-deep well in the state of Tamil Nadu. Rescuers are pumping oxygen to the boy but layers of mud mean they cannot assess the child’s condition.

Renaissance Painting Found in Kitchen in France Sells for €24m

A tiny early Renaissance masterpiece found in a French woman’s kitchen during a house clearance has fetched more than €24m at auction, making it the most expensive medieval painting ever sold. Christ Mocked, by the 13th-century Florentine painter Cimabue, had hung for decades above a cooking hotplate in the open-plan kitchen of a 1960s house near Compiègne, north of Paris.
