Australian authorities are sounding the alarm about the health of the Great Barrier Reef’s coral. The government agency in charge of managing the reef has downgraded the long-term outlook for the reef’s ecosystem from “poor” in 2014 to “very poor” in 2019. A World Heritage-listed natural wonder, the reef contains the world’s largest collection of coral reefs.
Hong Kong authorities on Friday charged pro-democracy activist Joshua Wong with organizing an illegal protest as they tighten a clampdown on unrest that has plunged the Asian financial hub into its biggest political crisis in more than two decades. Police arrested several other activists and blocked plans for a mass demonstration on Saturday, in a show of force a day before the fifth anniversary of China’s decision to rule out universal suffrage in the former British colony.
Hurricane Dorian hurtled toward the United States and was on track to become a major hurricane Friday before its expected landfall Monday into Tuesday along Florida’s east coast, forecasters say. The storm was slowly turning west on Friday as it makes it way back toward land and is expected to strengthen in the coming days. Dorian is then forecasted to slam the southeastern United States as a possible Category 4 storm.
An unprecedented iPhone hacking operation, which attacked “thousands of users a week” until it was disrupted in January, has been revealed by researchers at Google’s external security team. The operation, which lasted two and a half years, used a small collection of hacked websites to deliver malware on to the iPhones of visitors. Once hacked, the user’s deepest secrets were exposed to the attackers.
