The G7 countries have agreed to an immediate $20m (£16m) aid package to help Amazon countries fight wildfires and launch a longer-term global initiative to protect the rainforest. The assistance plan, announced by the French and Chilean presidents on Monday, would involve a program of reforestation, to be unveiled at the UN general assembly meeting next month. Satellite data has recorded more than 41,000 fires in the Amazon region so far this year.
President Donald Trump, facing pressure to scale back a U.S.-China trade war contributing to a global economic slowdown, claimed Monday that serious talks will begin soon although another round has been expected in Washington in September. Trump said his trade negotiators had received two “very good calls” from China on Sunday. The Chinese were unaware of any recent conversations.
Iran has sold the oil on the tanker which was detained by Royal Marines off Gibraltar, an Iranian government spokesperson has said. Iran did not say who it had been sold to but requested that the tanker be sent to the recipient. America has a warrant out for the ship and has warned nations not to accept it. After setting out from Gibraltar, the Adrian Darya first navigated to Greece, which refused to let it refuel.
Brazilian women are probably ashamed of President Jair Bolsonaro, French President Emmanuel Macron said on Monday, hitting back after the Brazilian leader mocked Macron’s wife on Facebook. The leaders have been feuding in recent weeks, with Macron blaming Bolsonaro for fires in the Amazon and accusing him of lying about climate change policy. Bolsonaro responded on Sunday to a Facebook post that compared the looks of his wife Michelle, 37, with Macron’s 66-year-old wife Brigitte.
A German family of four were among seven people killed when a helicopter and an ultralight plane collided mid-air over the Spanish island of Majorca. The debris came down on farmland near Inca, in the north of the popular tourist island off the east coast. The German couple and their two children were in the helicopter, which belonged to Rotorflug, a German firm.
