Scores from Mexico, Guatemala Detained in Mississippi Raids

The governments of Guatemala and Mexico said on Thursday that between them, almost 300 of their citizens had been detained in the southern U.S. state of Mississippi as part of sweeping U.S. immigration operations. U.S. immigration authorities arrested nearly 700 people at seven agricultural processing plants across the state on Wednesday in what federal officials said could be the largest worksite enforcement operation in a single state.

Three-day Protest Kicks off at Hong Kong Airport

Hong Kong’s Chief Executive Carrie Lam has said the government will not make any concessions to appease the protesters, hours after pro-democracy activists kicked off three days of rallies at Hong Kong’s airport. First launched in April, the protests began in opposition to a plan to allow extradition to mainland China, but have since morphed into a broader movement seeking to reverse a slide in freedoms in the city.

China on Red Alert as Typhoon Lekima Bears Down on East Coast

Chinese authorities have declared a red alert as a powerful typhoon heads towards the eastern coast. Typhoon Lekima is currently battering Taiwan with winds of more than 190km/h (120mph) and is due to make landfall in China’s Zhejiang province on Saturday. Lekima, which is the ninth typhoon so far this year, strengthened into a super typhoon late on Wednesday, but Taiwanese authorities have since downgraded it to a regular typhoon.

Italy’s Matteo Salvini Calls for Fresh Elections as Coalition Fractures

Matteo Salvini, Italy’s deputy prime minister and the leader of the far-right League party, has called for a snap election, urging the prime minister to reconvene parliament to confirm that the coalition government is no longer viable. The dramatic move on Thursday came after months of fighting between the League and its coalition partners, the anti-establishement Five Star Movement (M5S).
