Philippines Declares Dengue Epidemic as Deaths Surge

The Philippines has declared a “national dengue epidemic” after at least 622 people lost their lives from the mosquito-borne disease this year. At least 146,000 cases were recorded from January to 20 July – a 98% increase on the same period last year – the health department said. The epidemic was declared so that officials can identify areas in need of emergency attention. The infection causes flu-like illness, but occasionally becomes more severe.

President Trump is traveling on Wednesday to El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio — the sites of deadly mass shootings this past weekend. Local leaders are greeting the consoler-in-chief with skepticism but hope the president will hear them out. Dayton Mayor Nan Whaley, a Democrat, told reporters on Tuesday that she was “disappointed” with Trump’s response so far and with his failure to push for stricter gun laws.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s plan to change the status of Kashmir ran into fierce opposition from China and its ally Pakistan on Tuesday as the disputed territory lay under a telecoms blackout to forestall protests for a second day. China said it opposed India’s decision to revoke Kashmir’s special status and that New Delhi needed to be cautious on border issues.

Drug Dealer who Tried to Escape Jail as Daughter Found Dead in Cell

A Brazilian drug dealer who tried to escape prison dressed as his daughter has been found dead in his cell. Clauvino da Silva, a 42-year-old leader of one of the most powerful criminal groups in Brazil, Comando Vermelho, was stopped by guards at the prison in Rio de Janeiro on Saturday. He was dressed in a silicon mask, a long-haired dark wig, tight jeans and a pink t-shirt – trying to pass off as his 19-year-old daughter, who had come to visit him.

Fossils of Largest Parrot Ever Recorded Found in New Zealand

Fossils of the largest parrot ever recorded have been found in New Zealand. Estimated to have weighed about 7kg (1.1st), it would have been more than twice as heavy as the kākāpo, previously the largest known parrot. Paleontologists have named the new species Heracles inexpectatus to reflect its unusual size and strength and the unexpected nature of the discovery.
