Hong Kong Outcry After Masked Thugs Launch Attack

Pro-democracy activists and lawmakers in Hong Kong have accused the police of standing by as men dressed in white attacked commuters and protesters late on Sunday, leaving 45 hospitalized, including one who is critically injured. Video footage showed dozens of men, most in masks, storming a mass transit station in Yuen Long, chasing passengers and beating them with rods. The footage emerged after an anti-government march by hundreds of thousands of people on Sunday.

Puerto Rico Governor Refuses to Resign as Island Braces for Big Protest

Puerto Rico’s governor on Sunday said he would not seek re-election next year but refused to resign as the island braced for more protests by demonstrators demanding he step down over offensive chat messages. The July 13 publication of sexist and homophobic chat messages between Rossello and top aides unleashed simmering resentment over his handling of devastating 2017 hurricanes, alleged corruption in his administration and the island’s bankruptcy process.

India Launches Second Moon Mission

India has successfully launched its second lunar mission a week after it halted the scheduled blast-off due to a technical snag. Chandrayaan-2 was launched at 14:43 local time (09:13 GMT) on Monday from the Sriharikota space station. India hopes the $145m (£116m) mission will be the first to land on the Moon’s south pole. Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the mission for being “fully indigenous”.

Zelensky’s Party set for Unprecedented Majority in Ukraine Vote

The party of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky appears likely to win an absolute majority in Sunday’s parliamentary elections with a record share of the vote, according to partial results and media projections. Speaking shortly after exit polls indicated a win for his Servant of the People, Zelensky reiterated promises to stamp out corruption and end a separatist war in eastern Ukraine that has killed 13,000 people in the past five years.

‘Avengers: Endgame’ Passes ‘Avatar’ to Become the Highest-Grossing Film

“Avengers: Endgame,” the Disney and Marvel blockbuster, will move past “Avatar” on the list of all-time highest grossing films on Sunday in its 13th weekend of release, Disney reported Saturday night. “Avatar,” James Cameron’s science fiction film set on the planet of Pandora, held the record for 10 years. The latest “Avengers” film, starring Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans, has made more than $2.789 billion worldwide.
