Spanish police have arrested a member of the air force traveling with the Brazilian president’s advance party for the G20 summit in Japan after 39kg of cocaine was discovered in his luggage during a stopover in Seville. Bolsonaro confirmed the news in a statement on Tuesday night, saying he had been informed of the airman’s arrest by the defense minister.

Mexico’s Top Caribbean Beaches Hit by Seaweed Infestation

An infestation of a seaweed-like algae along some of Mexico’s most visited Caribbean beaches has pitted the local community against the president, who has described the problem as a “minor issue”. In a long-running issue attributed by many researchers to climate change, sargassum has covered the popular white sandbanks, turning the pristine waters brown and leaving a strong odor as it decomposes, alarming residents, businesses and tourists.

Pressure Builds over Italy Rescue Ship

Pressure has mounted on Italy after the UN and the European Commission called on Rome to end its stand-off with a migrant rescue boat. The Sea-Watch 3 reached the Italian island of Lampedusa on Wednesday with 42 rescued migrants. But charity Sea-Watch says authorities have prevented it from docking and no other country has come forward to help. It comes as Italy’s ruling parties attempt to clamp down on migrant rescue boats entering Italian waters.

Paris Bans 60% of Cars as Heatwave Continues to Roast Europe

Europe continues to endure record-breaking temperatures as hot air from the Sahara engulfs the continent. The French capital has seen temperatures soar past 40C (104F) and the local council has banned up to 60% of its cars to limit pollution that has been made worse by the heat. Older and less efficient cars have been banned within the A86 second ring-road – which includes Paris and 79 towns around it – for as long as the hot weather lasts.

Genoa Bridge Demolished in Dramatic Explosion

The remains of Genoa’s Morandi Bridge were blown up in a controlled explosion on Friday, nearly a year after the structure collapsed in a disaster that killed 43 people. 4,000 people were evacuated from their homes to clear the area, AFP reported, and explosives were attached to the legs and body of the bridge, which went down in about seven seconds in a flurry of smoke.
