Death Toll from Easter Sunday Terror Attacks in Sri Lanka Nears 300

At least nine bombs tore through churches and hotels in three Sri Lankan cities on Easter Sunday. The death toll had risen to at least 290, with more than 500 others wounded, by Monday morning. Defense Minister Ruwan Wijewardene described the coordinated blasts as a terrorist attack by religious extremists. A Sri Lankan government official said the seven suicide bombers that attacked churches and hotels on Easter Sunday were from the domestic militant group known as National Thowfeek Jamaath, but that they likely had support from outside the country.

Comic Zelenskiy Wins Ukraine Presidential Vote in Landslide

Results from nearly all polling stations show that TV star Volodymyr Zelenskiy has won the Ukrainian presidential runoff vote in a landslide. The Central Election Commission says Monday that Zelenskiy has won 73% of the vote while the incumbent President Petro Poroshenko got just 24% support with more than 95% of the ballots counted. Unlike in most of the elections in Ukraine’s post-Soviet history, Zelenskiy appears to have won both in Ukraine’s west and east, areas that have been traditionally polarized.

North Face Climbers Confirmed Dead After Banff National Park Avalanche

The bodies of three professional mountain climbers were found Sunday, days after they were presumed dead in an avalanche at Canada’s Banff National Park. David Lama, Jess Roskelley, and Hansjörg Auer were caught in an avalanche Wednesday while attempting to climb the east face of Howse Peak in Alberta, a North Face spokesman said. The three men, one American and two Europeans, were members of the company’s Global Athlete Team.

Colombia Landslide Kills Villagers on Easter Sunday

At least 17 people have died in Colombia following a landslide triggered by heavy rains. The early morning landslide hit at least eight homes on Easter Sunday and blocked a stretch of the Pan-American Highway in the community of Rosas, roughly 630 kilometers southwest of Bogota. At least 25 other people were still buried in the mud and debris, local media reports said. Military forces were deployed to affected areas to help in the recovery efforts.

Elon Musk’s SpaceX Suffers Capsule Anomaly During Florida Tests

Elon Musk’s SpaceX suffered an anomaly in one of its Crew Dragon capsules while conducting engine tests at the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida on Saturday, the company said. The issue was earlier reported by Florida Today, which said orange smoke was seen rising above SpaceX’s facilities, and that the anomaly was contained with no injuries. SpaceX said its teams are investigating and are working closely with U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) partners.

Sri Lanka Blocks Social Media After Easter Sunday Bombings

Sri Lankan authorities have blocked most social media services in the country following the Easter Sunday attacks that killed more than 200 people, a group that monitors internet censorship said. The NetBlocks observatory said it detected an intentional nationwide blackout of popular services, including Facebook, YouTube, WhatsApp, Instagram, Snapchat and Viber. Sri Lankan officials said they were temporarily blocking social media to curtail the spread of false information and ease tensions.
