Afghan Leaders Killed During ‘Inside Attack’

A police chief was killed by his own guard in Afghanistan’s Kandahar province at a security conference. The Taliban said the target had been General Scott Miller the US NATO commander in Afghanistan. Miller escaped the ‘insider attack’ while Kandahar governor Zalmay Wesa and spy chief Abdul Momin were also killed. Two Americans were wounded.

Trump Threatens to Close Southwest Border as Mexico Seeks UN Support

President Trump warned on Thursday he will shut down the southwest US border if Mexico does not stop the migrant caravan. Trump also said he will discontinue foreign aid to Honduras, Guatemala, and El Salvador. Mexico will request help from the UN refugee office to handle the influx of Honduran migrants arriving with the caravan.

The Justice Department opened an investigation into the Roman Catholic dioceses accused of covering of sexual abuse for decades in Pennsylvania. One of Spain’s most famous tourist attractions the Sagrada Familia basilica in Barcelona agreed to pay $41 million to city authorities for going more than 130 years without a building permit.

Trump Presumes Saudi Journalist Dead as Turkey Expands Search for Body

President Trump said on Thursday he presumes Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi to be dead and that the US response will be ‘very severe.’ Turkish police expanded their search for Khashoggi’s body to nearby forests and farmland. Turkish investigators claim to have recovered ‘many samples’ from their consulate search which they will use to test for DNA.

Russian President Putin Confirms Nuclear Defense Plan

Russian President Vladimir Putin hailed new missiles in Russia’s military arsenals and asserted nuclear weapons would be used in response to an incoming missile attack on the country. Putin said an attack would only be launched if early warning systems spotted missiles and said aggressors ‘should know that retaliation is inevitable.’ Putin claimed Russia’s new hypersonic missiles give the country a military edge.

China’s Economic Growth Reaches Weakest Point Since 2009

Official data released on Friday indicated that China’s economic growth slowed more than expected amid the trade war with the US. Economic growth in China reached its weakest point since the first quarter of 2009 with the yuan decreasing in value versus the dollar. China continues to navigate numerous problems associated with the trade war.
