US Sanctions China for Buying Russian Weapons

The US imposed sanctions against a Chinese military agency and it’s director on Thursday for buying fighter jets and missile systems from Russia, in breach of a sweeping US sanctions law punishing Moscow for meddling in the 2016 US election. China has told the US to withdraw sanctions on its military over purchases of Russian jets and missiles or “bear the consequences”.

WADA Lifts Sporting Ban on Russia

The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) on Thursday lifted a ban on Russia’s anti-doping agency (RUSADA), paving the way for Russian athletes to return to competition across all sports. WADA would reinstate the ban on the Russian anti-doping agency if a clear timeline for WADA to access the former Moscow laboratory data and samples is not provided as agreed.

Maryland Warehouse Shooting Leaves 4 Dead

An employee at a Rite Aid warehouse in Harford County fatally shot three co-workers and injured three others before killing herself Thursday morning. The sheriff’s office identified the suspected assailant as a 26-year-old woman. The shooting was one of three to erupt in US workplaces in the space of 24 hours.

Earth’s Earliest Known Animal Identified

Scientists have discovered molecules of fat in fossilized remains of Dickinsonia, an ancient group of organisms, to reveal the earliest confirmed animal in the geological record that lived on Earth 558 million years ago. The new finding ends the scientific debate, whether it is an animal or fungi, over Dickinsonia since it was first discovered 75 years ago.

Dozens Die As Ferry Capsizes in Lake Victoria

A ferry on the southern end of Africa’s largest lake Victoria in Tanzania sank Thursday killing at least 100 people. An unknown number of people have gone missing and it is feared that more than 200 people may have drowned. The overloaded passenger ferry MV Nyerere was also carrying cargo including sacks of maize and cement when it capsized, close to the dock.
