Russian Pussy Riot and UK Restaurant Poisonings

Russian activist group Pussy Riot member Pyotr Verzilov was flown to Germany on Thursday for treatment after suspected poisoning. Verzilov holds Russian and Canadian citizenship. Two people, including one Russian, got sick while eating in a Salisbury, UK restaurant on Sunday; the city where a previous poisoning occurred. Authorities said it is not clear if a crime was committed.

Daily Dose of Aspirin Harmful to Healthy, Older Adults

A new Australian-led international study published Sunday in the New England Journal of Medicine has changed the way people will view the health benefits of aspirin. The study found that long-term use of aspirin may be harmful, even at low doses, when used by older people who have not experienced a heart attack or stroke.

New Marathon Record Set by Kenya’s Eliud Kipchoge

Kenya’s Eliud Kipchoge set a new marathon world record on Sunday, completing a race in Berlin in two hours one minute and 39 seconds. Kipchoge beat the standing record set by fellow Kenyan runner Dennis Kimetto in 2014 by nearly one minute and 20 seconds. Kipchoge won the London Marathon for the third time earlier this year and is an Olympic champion.

Hurricane Florence Slows Down as Typhoon Mangkhut Moves to China

Hurricane Florence slowed to a Tropical Depression on Sunday while continuing to endanger communities, with the death toll reaching at least 16 across North and South Carolina. Rain and flooding are expected to continue throughout the week. Typhoon Mangkhut which left at least 33 miners dead and 29 missing in the Philippines is now moving across southern China.

Manafort to Cooperate with Mueller & Kavanaugh Accused of Sexual Assault

Former Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort agreed on Friday to cooperate ‘fully, truthfully, completely, and forthrightly’ with special counsel Robert Mueller. Manafort’s decision comes after President Trump commented that Manafort ‘refused to break. Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s Supreme Court confirmation became uncertain Sunday when a woman accused him of sexual assault when they were teenagers.

China Orders Taiwan to End Spying Efforts

China accused Taiwan’s spy agencies of increasing efforts to steal intelligence on Sunday, saying Taiwan’s goal is ‘infiltration’ and ‘sabotage.’ China demanded that Taiwan end the spying activities immediately and warned against further damaging the strained relations. The accusations come amid China’s effort to encourage Taiwanese to permanently settle in China.
